Uche Uzorka (geb. 1974, Nigeria) war im Monat Juli artist in residence im Iwalewahaus Bayreuth. Zum Abschluss seines Aufenthaltes sind nun Collagen und eine Installation, die in dem Zeitraum entstanden sind, in der Sübkültür zu sehen.
Uzorka sieht Archive generell als begrenzte Bibliotheken, in der Wissen gelagert, geschätzt und bewahrt wird. Mit dem Archiv des Iwalewahauses arbeitete er, indem er langsam, wiederholt und obsessiv Bilder geschreddert und zerschnitten hat, die er in Büchern und anderen Druckmaterialien fand, die einen Bezug zu Nigeria und anderen afrikanischen Ländern haben.
Der Arbeitsprozess war auch ein emotionaler, als Uzorka mit den Photographien von Werken des eigentlichen Archivs konfrontiert war, die er dann zerkleinerte und somit einer Transformation von dem ursprünglichen Zustand, in dem sie greifbar sind, also gesehen, angefasst und verstanden werden können, aussetzte.
Uzorkas Interesse an diesem Archiv ist mit seinen Erfahrungen als Student verbunden, als er an Bildern von Werken lernte, die oft nicht zugänglich waren. Durch den Prozess der Zerkleinerung von Bildern, die Originalwerke des Iwalewahaus-Archivs repräsentieren und zwar vertraut, aber doch von ihrem Ursprung getrennt sind, thematisiert er sowohl unser alltägliches Verhältnis mit und Konsum von eingelagerten Werken, als auch den limitierten Zugang zu künstlerischen Originalen, der nicht nur in Nigeria problematisch ist.
Es handelt sich jedoch nicht um Zerstörung, sondern um eine Transformation – die Bilder haben nun eine andere Form, auch eine andere Form der Aufbewahrung, und eine neue visuelle Qualität.
„Where were you when I was here?“ wird als work-in-progress präsentiert. Das Projekt wurde durch das Goethe-Institut in Lagos (Nigeria) ermöglicht und ist Teil des 18-monatigen Forschungsprojektes „Mash-Up the Archive“, unterstützt von der Kulturstiftung des Bundes und koordiniert von Sam Hopkins und Nadine Siegert.

Uche Uzorka (b. 1974, Nigeria) spent the month of July in residency at Iwalewahaus in Bayreuth.
Uzorka sees the archive, in general, as „a restricted library“, where information is stored, valued, respected and conserved. In being confronted with the Iwalewahaus archive, the artist took on the action of slowly, repetitively, obsessively shredding and cutting images he found in books and other print materials relating to art from Nigeria and other African countries.
In describing his process, Uzorka states that he went through a varying of emotions when confronting himself with „photographs of the works from the actual archive, putting them through the shredding machine, and physically seeing them being shred-up to pieces, knowing that once they get from the state where they are in photographic form, where they are tangible and can be seen, touched and understood, to the shredded form, there is a change – a transformation.“
The interest in working with this particular archive could be said to relate to the artist’s experience as a student, where images of the original works were studied, but with limited, if any, access to the original artworks. Through the process of cutting up images that represent artworks from the Iwalewa-haus archive, and works that are familiar, yet disconnected from their original, the artist hopes to raise questions related not only to our day-to-day relationship with and consumption of the works stored, but also to the problem faced in Nigeria as well as other countries, where access to the original works is often times limited.
The artist goes on, stating that „to some it may seem like destruction, a direct crumbling of the original, but in actual fact they are now in a different state of being – a different kind of form, a different kind of storage, a different kind of visual impact.“
